MGM Fire Update
They think the fire started in the Deli Restaurant due to a short. I just ate lunch there the afternoon before prior to my shift. I hadn’t noticed, but there were no sprinklers in the casino. They had some in the kitchen and service areas, but none on the casino floor or in the hotel towers. I didn’t even think to LOOK when I started there. You can bet I won’t make that mistake again. Problem is, the fire code didn’t require them so is the Strip just full of high rise tinderboxes?
Most everybody I worked with regularly wasn’t there when the fire started, because we work similar shifts, so that’s a relief. We did lose a few of the overnighters/daytimers, though, which upsets me. That fire must have been FAST, because I heard that it destroyed the fire alarm before it could go off. WHAT. THE. FUCK.
According to the news, at least 84 people have died and at least 534 more were injured. That’s awful… but it could have been SO much worse, considering how many rooms we have: 26 floors, 2076 rooms.
Looks like I’m out of a job for a while. At least I’m still alive.
